Defeat starts and ends with YOU (not literally of course, it ends in a “T”):

Defeat within the Mind is nothing more than your own will creating a barrier for the goals you know you can complete. I often face this wall from time to time, but have come to realize that this border isn’t something I put up because I know I can’t do it and will fail, but because I might be scared of my true potential lying dormant within me. If I do what some may think is superhuman, than I have no excuses to anything else in my life that may face me.

It is for this reason that I think most people are willing to face defeat. Not because they are going to fall, but because they are scared of getting up when they face other things that may cause walls that they aren’t used to climbing.

For example: I’m used to facing the walls of a heavy weight staring right in front of me. A week out from reaching my goal of reaching the next heavy press, but am I used to facing the walls of helping out a stranger in need or waking up early in the morning to write one article that no one will read? Why help out a stranger when I may not receive any gratitude, why wake up in the morning when there won’t anyone to comment back?

It matters because training for weights is a metaphor for life – the metaphor that stands for heavy shit can lifted, thrown, pulled, pushed, dragged, and even heaved if you are willing to persevere past defeat and to glory. Life bogs us down with heavy shit all the time, but just like the iron, we CAN do with it whatever we so please…if we choose to face it.

Here’s a few simple steps for learning how to overcome things you normally don’t:

1. Write down what you have overcome in the past and present.

Ex. Lifting 88lbs overhead. Learning how to speak another language. Getting an “A” on a test.

2. Now think about to what you did to overcome those things in the past and present.

Ex. Program Minimum from ETK, Rosetta Stone language program 3x a week, Studying small bits of information everyday for 30 mins.

3. Write out how many times you “failed” before you finally reached your goal and how it felt when you finally succeeded.

Ex. 16 weeks, 1 year, 6 weeks. 100s and 100s of times, etc.

4. Find out if you can break what you are trying to overcome into smaller goals.

Ex. Can I press 88lbs overhead half way? Can I learn to speak basic sentences? What are parts of the subject I cannot understand?

5. Find out what was common out of all the things you overcame and how you can apply it to what you are trying to overcome presently.

Ex. Dedication, Perseverance, Constant Action, Repetition
